Short answer: modern LED neon signs are low-risk when they are properly manufactured, installed and used — but they are still electrical products, and "neon sign" now covers two very different things. Most signs sold today are LED neon: a flexible silicone tube on an acrylic backing, running on 12V DC from a wall adapter. Traditional glass neon is a hand-bent gas-filled tube driven by a transformer at thousands of volts. Almost every safety warning you've read about neon belongs to the second kind. Note that the low voltage figure describes the sign itself. The power adapter still plugs into 120V household current, so the cable and adapter deserve the same care you'd give any other appliance.

Do Neon Signs Get Hot?

LED neon gets warm, not hot. Put your hand on a properly working sign after it has been running for several hours and the tubing should normally feel only slightly warm. The LEDs are low-wattage and distributed along the whole length of the tube — roughly 8 watts per meter in a Voltleds sign — so there's no concentrated hot spot the way there is with a filament or halogen bulb.

The power adapter runs warmer than the sign does, and some warmth there is expected: converting 120V AC down to 12V DC sheds a little heat. What matters is the difference between warm and abnormal. Unplug the sign and inspect or replace the adapter if it becomes unusually hot to hold, smells of hot plastic, shows discoloration or scorching, cuts out repeatedly, or makes unusual noise.

Glass neon is a different case. The tube itself gets noticeably hot in operation and the electrode ends run hotter than the rest, which is why glass signs are mounted out of reach with clearance from anything flammable.

Can a Neon Sign Cause a Fire?

A properly designed LED neon sign has a low fire risk, but it is still an electrical product and the risk isn't zero. In practice, problems are far more likely to come from damaged wiring, an unsuitable adapter, poor ventilation or careless installation than from the LED tubing itself. The four things actually worth checking:

  • Damaged or pinched cable. A cord run under a rug, crushed behind furniture or chewed by a pet can short. Route cables where nothing rests on them.

  • No ventilation around the adapter. Don't bury it under a cushion, seal it in a closed cabinet, or leave it wrapped in its own coiled cable.

Do Neon Signs Use a Lot of Electricity?

Estimates use roughly 18¢ per kWh, close to the current US residential average. Actual power use depends on the total length of LED tubing in the design, not on the sign's outside dimensions — an intricate 24-inch graphic can contain more tubing than a simple 40-inch word.

Traditional glass neon generally uses more electricity than a comparable LED sign, though the exact difference depends on tube length and diameter, color, transformer loading and how the sign is built. Running cost is one of the main reasons commercial buyers moved to LED.

Are Neon Signs Safe in a Bedroom or Kid's Room?

LED neon is generally well suited to bedrooms and kids' rooms, because it uses low-voltage LED lighting and flexible silicone tubing rather than fragile glass at high voltage. That's a large part of why it replaced glass in home décor.

Is There Gas or Mercury Inside?

Glass neon does contain gas. Pure neon produces the classic red-orange glow; other colors come from different gases and phosphor coatings, and some traditional tubes — particularly argon-based phosphor tubes — may also contain a small amount of mercury. That's why the standard advice for a shattered glass tube is to ventilate the room, avoid vacuuming the debris, sweep it up with stiff cardboard rather than by hand, and seal it in a container for proper disposal. It's a real reason to prefer LED anywhere near children, pets or foot traffic.

Can You Leave an LED Neon Sign On Overnight?

Generally yes.   • Give the sign clearance from curtains and anything that traps heat.
